Police have addressed criticism over naming former MP Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, also known as Nixon Chowdhury, as the main suspect in the attack and vandalism at Bhanga Police Station during a protest against the delimitation of the Faridpur-4 constituency.

A media statement signed by Additional Police Superintendent (Crime and Ops) Shamsul Azam on Friday night provided information about the Awami League leader.

The statement said locals have been protesting since Sept 5 after Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga Upazila were moved from Faridpur-4 to Faridpur-2 constituency in the parliamentary seat delimitation for the national election.

It also said Nixon exploited these protests, making provocative statements and taking actions on social media that have disrupted law and order in the Upazila.

On Sept 9, he posted a video on social media, calling the interim government and the Election Commission illegal, and urging party supporters to continue protests and block roads if necessary.

The video was widely circulated, “inciting” followers and the public toward violence.

According to the statement, Nixon’s supporters entered government offices in Bhanga, vandalising property and setting vehicles on fire on Sept 15.

In response to legal action, he posted another video making “illegal” demands against the government and the Election Commission and criticised police on social media.
