Police have arrested deposed Awami League government’s former expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister Imran Ahmad.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch detained him from Dhaka’s Banani on Sunday midnight, according to a statement issued by the agency.
But the agency did not say on what charges he has been arrested.
A lawsuit was filed against the six-time former Sylhet MP at Paltan Police Station on charges of embezzlement and human trafficking on Sept 3.
A total of 103 people, including former secretary Ahmed Munirus Saleheen, former MP Masud Uddin Chowdhury, Nizam Hazari, and Benazir Ahmed, were accused in the case.
A tea trader and consultant by profession, Imran was elected to parliament from the Sylhet-4 seat as a candidate with a boat symbol from 2018 to the 12th parliamentary election. He was elected to parliament twice before.
After winning the 11th parliament, he first became state minister for expatriates' welfare and overseas employment, then a minister in 2019. He was not in former premier Sheikh Hasina's last cabinet.
