A clash has broken out between hawkers, police and city corporation workers over the footpath evictions in Dhaka’s Mirpur 10.
Three city corporation vehicles were set on fire during the incident.
Witnesses said the incident took place around 10:30am on Wednesday.
They said an electric wire was torn while the footpath was being cleared. This led to a fire that spread to an electric transformer nearby. The transformer exploded, spreading the fire further.
When the fire started, it sparked a clash between enraged hawkers and city corporation workers. When police went to the scene, the hawkers also clashed with the law enforcers. Three city corporation vehicles were set on fire amid the violence.
Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabder, deputy commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Mirpur Division, told bdnews24.com: "Personnel have been sent to the scene. We will provide details after the situation is brought under control."
The clash has brought traffic on the road from Mirpur 10 to Mirpur 14 to a halt. A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area.
DC Hasan said, "We have received reports that the glass of a police vehicle has been vandalised. City corporation vehicles have also been torched. We are trying to bring the situation under control."
