A mother has been accused of killing her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter by slashing her throat in Satkhira’s Kalaroa.

Her family claims the woman, Tania Khatun alias Asma, 30, has been mentally ill for a year.

The incident took place around 12:30pm on Friday at the child's maternal grandfather's house in Batra village, said Kalaroa Police Station chief Asaduzzaman.

The deceased child, Khadija Khatun, lived with Tania in the Batra Milpara area of the Upazila, police said.

Asma's father Abdul Mazed said, “Asma has been married to Tauhidur Rahman of Kushodanga village for 10 years. They have two sons and a daughter.

“My daughter has been mentally ill for a year now. Due to this, Tauhidur sent Asma and her children to Batra village.

“We tried our best to treat her locally. She was supposed to be taken to the doctor after Jumma prayers today [Friday, so I was getting a van for that. But in the meantime, the incident took place.”

He also said, “Asma slit Khadija’s throat with a kitchen knife when no one was home in the afternoon.

“After killing her daughter, she also tried to slit the throat of her 5-year-old son,” he said.

Before she could do that, however, her mother Aleya Khatun intervened and stopped her, he added.

Officer Asaduzzaman said, “Upon receiving the news, police reached the spot, recovered the girl’s body and sent it to the Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Asma has been detained on charges of killing her child."
