Additional Inspector General Ali Hossain Fakir has been named the new inspector general of police (IGP) amid an administrative shake-up after the new government took office.
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the decision in an order issued on Tuesday.
Ali had been serving as chief of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
A member of the 15th BCS police cadre from Bagerhat, Ali replaces Baharul Alam in the top post.
During his career, he has held several key positions, including superintendent of police in Netrokona, Feni and Magura, and deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara Zone in 2008. He later served in a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
In November 2022, while commanding the 3rd APBn in Khulna, he was sent into compulsory retirement over allegations that he had been associated with the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the BNP's student front, during his time at Dhaka University.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on Aug 5, 2024, Ali was reinstated to the force at the rank of superintendent of police under the interim administration. He was subsequently promoted to deputy inspector general and then to additional inspector general in August last year.
