President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will offer Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the main Eid prayer congregation of the National Eidgah.

The main congregation will be held at 8:30am.

State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam shared the information with reporters after visiting the National Eidgah on Saturday.

He said, “The Eid prayer congregation at the National Eidgah will, obviously, be a historic one. This is because the honourable president will offer Eid prayers here and this is the first Eid-ul-Fitr celebration in Bangladesh after the BNP formed the government with an absolute majority through free, fair and impartial elections. The honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has agreed to offer Eid prayers at the National Eidgah ground.”

“After a long time, the nation will get to see a male prime minister offering prayers with the president—two VVIPs offering prayers together.”

The main Eid congregation will be held at the National Eidgah organised by the Dhaka South City Corporation. State Minister Shahe Alam and City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam came to the National Eidgah on Thursday morning to see the preparation for the main congregation. Home Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and Acting Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Sarwar accompanied them. They toured the entire Eidgah.

MAIN CONGREGATION AT 8:30AM

In a news briefing, Dhaka City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam said: "The main congregation will be held at the National Eidgah at 8:30am. This time, I am happy to announce that our honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will offer prayers together with us in the same congregation. We hope that our cabinet members and other high-ranking officials will offer the prayers here as well."

"The National Eidgah allows 35,000 people to offer their prayers together. There are arrangements for women to pray. Arrangements for ablution are also available at the ground. The same arrangements are made for women."

The administrator has urged city residents to participate in the main congregation at the National Eidgah.

In response to a question, the state minister for local government said that around 40,000 people including men and women, would be able to offer prayers at the ground. There were special arrangements for women, he said.

The state minister said that the Dhaka divisional commissioner will hold a meeting to discuss alternative measures in case of excessive rain and will inform the media of them at a later time.

The city administrator said that police, RAB and other law enforcement agencies will be deployed to ensure overall security at the Eidgah.

He said, "Special Security Force (SSF) members are working for the security of VVIPs."

PREPARATIONS IN PLACE

The surroundings of the National Eidgah have been cleaned. The main entrance is adorned with an arch bearing the words “O Mon Ramzan er Oi Rojar Sheshe Elo Khushir Eid, Eid Mubarak” [A happy Eid comes after a month of fasting during Ramadan. Eid Mubarak]

The entire Eidgah ground has been covered with tarpaulin and carpets have been spread. Fans and power connections have been set up. Alternatives have been arranged in case of power failure.

Separate arrangements have been made for the ablution of devotees. Rows of water taps have been newly installed for ablutions. A system for safe drinking water has also been installed.

A police and RAB control room and a health service centre have been set up at the National Eidgah. The administrator said that a team of the Fire Service and Civil Defence will also be stationed near the National Eidgah.

There are two entrances to the National Eidgah. A separate gate has been made through the Supreme Court premises for the entry of VVIPs.
