Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has congratulated Sushila Karki on becoming Nepal’s interim prime minister, calling her appointment a reflection of the Nepali people’s trust during a turbulent time.

Karki, a former chief justice, was sworn in on Friday evening at the presidential palace in Kathmandu, becoming the first woman in Nepal’s history to take up the role.

In a message sent on Saturday, the head of Bangladesh's interim government said: "Your assumption of this high office, at a critical and challenging time, is a reflection of the trust and confidence reposed in you by the people of Nepal."

"As a longstanding friend and neighbour of Nepal, we are confident that under your able leadership and guidance, Nepal and its resilient people will continue to progress on the path of peace, development and stability".

Yunus also expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to work closely with the new prime minister to strengthen “the deep friendship, cooperation and mutual respect” between the two countries.

Grieving the loss of lives in Nepal’s recent political unrest, he said: "We extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and wish a swift and full recovery to all those who were injured."

The chief advisor wished Karki good health and success, voicing hopes for “lasting peace and prosperity” for the Nepali people.

Karki’s appointment follows the resignation of KP Sharma Oli after days of violent protests led by Nepal's youth, drawing parallels with Bangladesh’s student uprising that toppled the Awami League regime.

At least 51 people were killed and more than 1,300 injured during the unrest, Reuters reports.

Demonstrators had demanded the lifting of bans on unregistered social media platforms and an end to entrenched corruption.

The unrest saw widespread protests, looting, arson and curfews across the country. Authorities have now begun lifting those restrictions in Kathmandu Valley and other regions, as Nepal gradually returns to normalcy.

Nepal has also announced that a general election will be held on Mar 5, 2026.
