Local government elections can now be held, according to the National Citizens' Committee, which has urged action to address the collapse of the local government structure caused by the recent student-led mass uprising.
"The situation now allows for local government elections," said Alaudddin Mohammad, a committee member, at a press conference at their central office in Dhaka's Banglamotor on Saturday.
In response to a question, he said: "Citizens are not receiving even basic services. The local government structure has completely fallen apart.
“This is an extremely crucial issue. We have learned that the government is preparing for elections [local government elections]."
The political platform believes that before the general elections, the Election Commission needs to demonstrate its capability by holding elections to create a strong local government, treating local representatives separately from national politics.
The interim government has dissolved the city corporations, district, and Upazila councils, appointing administrators instead.
Although union councils remain in place, most elected representatives affiliated with the Awami League are either in hiding or in jail on different charges.
Their absence has left citizens unable to access the services they require.
Alauddin said if the government begins preparations in the next two to three months, both parliamentary and local elections could be held at the same time.
At an event in Sylhet the same day, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said he was not yet ready to comment on the timing of local government elections.
