Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Muhammad Yunus on the Nobel laureate becoming the chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government.
After Yunus and 16 advisers to the new administration were sworn in at the Bangabhaban in Dhaka on Thursday night, Modi also said his Bharatiya Janata Party-led government wants protection of the Hindus in Bangladesh.
"My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities,” the Indian leader said in a post on X.
“We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities,” he added amid reports of attacks on Hindus in parts of Bangladesh in the wake of the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and her departure to India.
Modi also said India remains “committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development”.
