Police have taken a man into custody for questioning after his wife, a student of Jahangirnagar University, was brought dead to a private hospital in Savar with suspicious injuries.

Dhaka District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman confirmed that Fahim Al Hasan was detained shortly after the death of his wife Sharmin Jahan, a 51st-batch student of the university's public administration department.

While the husband claimed to have found his wife injured at home, investigators are treating the case as a potential homicide.

"We have taken him into custody to verify his version of events and are currently interrogating him," the SP said.

According to Fahim’s statement to police, he arrived at their rented apartment in the Islamnagar area, adjacent to the university campus, at approximately 2:30pm.

He claimed the door was locked and, upon entering, discovered Sharmin lying on the floor, bleeding from a head wound.

Fahim told officers that he and several neighbours immediately transported her to Enam Medical College Hospital (EMCH).

EMCH physician Yusuf Ali said the student was brought dead to the facility at 5:15pm.

"The nature of the injuries suggests this could be a murder," said Rube Howlader, the chief of Ashulia Police.

The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for a post-mortem to determine the precise cause of death.
