The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested six people who were allegedly preparing to commit a robbery while posing as police detectives near the Shahbagh Metro Station.
They were arrested during a raid around 10:15pm on Tuesday beneath the station, opposite BIRDEM Hospital, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Aktar Hossain said in a statement on Thursday.
The arrestees are Jewel Mridha, 38, Ramiz Talukdar, 36, Jasim Talukdar alias Riaz, 46, Rahman Hawladar, 39, Billal, 32, and Maruf, 38.
According to the statement, the DB’s Mirpur Division Illegal Arms Recovery and Drug Control Team received information that several people in the area were wearing fake DB uniforms and preparing to commit a robbery.
The team then conducted a raid and arrested the six suspects.
Police recovered a toy pistol, an empty toy magazine, a walkie-talkie, a pair of handcuffs and two jackets bearing the letters “DB” from them.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspects admitted that they had long been using fake DB identities and uniforms to detain people and commit robberies in different parts of Dhaka, police said.
A case has been filed against the six with Shahbagh Police Station. They were later sent to court.
