Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has met with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih.
The meeting took place at the Hyatt Grand Central Hotel in New York on Tuesday afternoon, said Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman.
He said, “The meeting discussed resolving the longstanding Rohingya crisis and creating a conducive environment in Myanmar for the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya.”
“Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that, on humanitarian grounds, Bangladesh has been sheltering a large number of Rohingya for a long time. There is no alternative to the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya to their homeland for a lasting solution to the crisis. To this end, a more effective and coordinated initiative by the international community is needed.”
The additional press secretary said, “Strengthening international cooperation was emphasised to expedite the repatriation process while continuing humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya people.”
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees praised Bangladesh’s humanitarian role in providing shelter to the displaced Rohingya and stressed the importance of continued international cooperation for a sustainable solution to the crisis.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Irene Khan were present during the meeting.
