After a scorching heatwave, Chattogram has finally seen a bit of long-awaited rain.
A prolonged heatwave began in the Bengali month of Chaitra and persisted for a long time. The long wait finally came to an end in mid-Boishakh.
It rained in nearly all Upazilas in the district and in the port city on Thursday morning. The sky was cloudy since the morning after the district saw a few raindrops at night. It started raining with gusty winds at 9am.
However, the drizzle lasted for only 40 minutes. After the rain, the mercury dropped slightly compared to the past few days and there was a light wind.
Netizens took to social media to express their excitement after the rain. Many posted photos and videos of the shower to share their relief from the searing heat.
Around 6mm of rainfall has been recorded in the district until noon. This is the rain of a nor'wester, also known as a Kalboishakhi. It may rain with strong winds and thunder in the next 24 hours, according to meteorologist Md Abdul Barek from the Patenga Met Office.
“However, this is not monsoon rain. It will take another month for the monsoon to start."
The sun began to beat down again around 11am after the rain, but the wind brought a bit of relief from the heat.
