Police have recovered the blood-soaked bodies of two children who were siblings from a flat at a multi-storey building in Gazipur’s Tongi.
The victims, Maliha, 6, and Abdullah, 4, were found inside a third-floor apartment of the eight-storey building owned by Sanowar Mia in the Tech area of Rupban in Arichpur on Friday, according to Faridul Islam, chief of Tongi East Police Station.
The children were the daughter and son of Abdul Baten Mia, a resident of Tatuakandi village in Brahmanbaria, the officer said.
Baten, who is involved in the transport business, and his family, including his wife Saleha Begum and mother, live in the flat.
Citing family accounts, police said the children had lunch with their parents and grandmother and later, Saleha had retired to a room for a nap while the grandmother had gone upstairs to another flat.
Meanwhile, the father went out, leaving the children alone in one of the rooms by themselves.
Saleha reportedly awoke sometime later to find the door to the children’s room open.
On discovering the bloodied bodies, she began screaming.
Hearing her cries, the grandmother rushed downstairs and alerted Baten.
Neighbours gathered following the commotion and called police, the officer said.
Later, police recovered the bodies and brought them to the station for preliminary investigation.
The family says unidentified assailants entered the flat between 4pm and 4:30pm and murdered the children with sharp weapons — a version that matches police’s initial findings.
“The bodies of the two children have been recovered and sent to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital morgue in Gazipur for autopsy,” said Faridul.
He added, “Police have started work to unearth the reason for the murders. Legal action is being processed in this incident.”
