A man in Chattogram has died after allegedly being beaten during a local arbitration meeting over the "forced" marriage of his teenage daughter to a neighbour.
The incident occurred on Friday night in the Amtal area of Hathazari Upazila's Chowdhuryhat Sandwip Colony.
Police said the cause of the man's death has not yet been confirmed.
However, authorities have been told there was a commotion during the arbitration session. An autopsy report will determine whether the man was beaten to death.
The dead man, identified as Fakhrul Islam, 58, was a resident of the Chowdhuryhat Sandwip Colony.
According to local residents, a man named Rifat, who lives in the same neighbourhood, married Fakhrul’s 14-year-old daughter on Jul 27.
The girl’s family later filed a general diary with the local police station. She was eventually found in Noakhali and returned to her family with the help of law-enforcing agencies.
A meeting was held on Friday night between the two families to settle the dispute.
Tensions escalated during the discussions, and at one point, members of the man’s side allegedly assaulted Fakhrul. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Kazi Md Tarek Aziz, the additional superintendent of police for the Hathazari Circle, said that a general diary had been filed, alleging that the girl had been taken and married by her neighbour. She was rescued from the Subarnachar area of Noakhali on Jul 28.
“An arbitration meeting was held between the two families over the matter on Friday,” the officer said.
“We have learnt that there was a commotion there. Fakhrul fell ill during the meeting.”
Aziz said the family has alleged that Fakhrul was beaten to death, but the cause of death cannot be confirmed until the results of the autopsy are available.
No arrests have been made as of Sunday, but several people are being questioned in connection with the incident, according to police.
