A man suspected of being a mugger has been beaten to death by a mob in Dhaka, according to the police.

The incident occurred at the Keraniganj jetty early on Friday morning.

Polie said the suspect and his accomplices attempted to escape by jumping into the river when people chased them. They later swam to Sowarighat, where a mob caught and attacked them.

Chawkbazar Police Station chief Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman said the dead man, believed to be around 25 years old, has yet to be identified.

“The mugging occurred in the Keraniganj jetty area in the early morning. The suspects jumped into the river as the public chased them,” he said

“Two of them swam ashore at Sowarighat, where they were caught and beaten by the public. We rescued the suspects and took them to the hospital, where one of them died. They have yet to be identified. We have heard that two others were caught on the opposite bank of the river, but do not yet know the details.”

Meanwhile, Chawkbazar and Keraniganj police took three injured people to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early in the morning, according to Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH Police Outpost.

“Chawkbazar police brought in two people subjected to public beatings and Keraniganj police brought one. One of the suspects brought in by Chawkbazar police later died,” he said.

The body of the suspect has been kept in the morgue for an autopsy, Faruk added.
