An Indian national accused of trying to send sensitive state documents and photographs of key government sites to a foreign intelligence agency has been placed on seven-day remand in Dhaka.

A court granted custody for interrogation on Thursday after police sought more time to question the man, Rabiul Islam, over the alleged espionage activities.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah issued the order on Thursday after the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) requested a 10-day extension to interrogate the suspect.

Rabiul was initially detained on Sept 22 in Uttara on suspicion of involvement in sabotage activities.

He was remanded twice under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure -- first for four days and subsequently for another four -- while detectives conducted preliminary questioning.

According to police, interrogation confirmed the espionage allegations against Rabiul.

DB Inspector Mesbah Uddin filed a case at Uttara West Police Station on Thursday, leading to his arrest under specific espionage charges.

The first information report (FIR) highlights discrepancies in Rabiul's official documents, including inconsistent birth dates across his driving licence and passport.

Although an Indian citizen, his passport listed his birthplace as Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh.

Under questioning, Rabiul reportedly admitted to entering Bangladesh multiple times over the past decade using both tourist and business visas.

Investigators allege he operated under the guise of commercial activities to gather intelligence and maintain communication with a foreign agency.

He last entered Bangladesh via the Bhomra Land Port in Satkhira on Sept 14.

Between Sept 15 and 22, he allegedly collected and attempted to transmit images of restricted zones and classified state documents to a foreign intelligence agency.
