Calls for the resignation of Home Affairs Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury have gained momentum amid concerns over Bangladesh’s law and order situation, with demonstrations taking place at Dhaka University and other locations.
The Anti-discrimination Student Movement expressed solidarity with the protests, its Convenor Hasnat Abdullah said during an event at a madrasa in Cumilla’s Brahmanpara on Monday afternoon.
“The overall law and order situation has worsened. We are trying to restore order. We are working to prevent widespread panic among the public.”
"On Sunday night, protests were held at Dhaka University demanding the resignation of the home advisor. We stand in solidarity with this movement.
“That is why we went to the advisor’s residence and found him holding a press conference."
Earlier in the day, Hasnat attended a farewell and prayer event for the 2025 Dakhil candidates at Fayezia Razzakia Islamia Dakhil Madrasa in Brahmanpara.
Speaking to journalists after the event, he said: “A major shift has taken place in the country. For over 15 years, people have endured fascist rule.
“This has left them mentally traumatised. Are we recognising these issues?”
The convenor continued, “We acknowledge that law and order have deteriorated, and muggings in society have increased.
“The incident in Banashree on Sunday night was unexpected. There is a tendency to politicise everything—blaming one side or another, saying ‘they did it’, ‘we didn’t do it’.”
Hasnat urged that the focus should be on identifying criminals as criminals and taking action against them, rather than politicising the situation.
