NCP convoy attacked again, this time in Sylhet

A motorcade carrying National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders has come under attack during the party's “July March” programme in Sylhet’s Golapganj, after a similar incident in Habiganj.

Brickbats were hurled at the convoy near Chowmuhani intersection on Thursday, smashing the rear windscreen of the vehicle carrying Sarjis Alam, the party's chief organiser for the northern region.

Local NCP leaders blamed Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists for the incident.

No casualties have been reported.

The attack took place around noon after the convoy left a meeting with families of those killed in the July Uprising at the Golapganj Municipal Auditorium, said Md Sabed Ali, chief of Golapganj Police Station.

After the incident, Sarjis wrote on Facebook that "BNP criminals" had carried out a "bloody attack" on the convoy in Golapganj and vandalised vehicles.

Witnesses said a group of people shouted "fake, fake" slogans as the NCP leaders left the meeting venue. The attack took place after the convoy reached the intersection, where an autorickshaw was also damaged.

Members of the law-enforcing agencies later reached the scene and moved to bring the situation under control.

Police officer Sabed said bricks had been thrown from a distance as the convoy was leaving the programme.

“They were heading towards Sylhet after the event."

Shortly after his first post, Sarjis wrote on Facebook again: "BNP criminals have attacked us for a second time at Sylhet's Panchmile Bazar. Does Tarique Rahman want to become Sheikh Hasina?"

On Tuesday evening, the NCP's "July March" faced an attack in Habiganj.

Central NCP leaders reached Sylhet after facing police obstacles in Moulvibazar on Wednesday, where local activists welcomed them with flowers near South Surma's Paraichak bypass.
