Three people have been killed, including a father and son, after a sand-laden truck crashed into a CNG autorickshaw in Bogura’s Shariakandi. Two people – the mother and daughter of the family – have also been injured in the accident.

The accident occurred in the Fulbari Kathaltola area of the Upazila around 7am on Friday. The dead have been identified as Bipul Chandra Das, 38, from Gaibandha’s Saghata Upazila, his son Biplob Chandra Das, 5, and autorickshaw driver Shukur Ali, 40, from Shibganj Upazila.

The injured are Bipul’s wife Mamata Rani and daughter Rupa Moni Das.

Jamirul Islam, chief of Shariatkandi Police Station, said that the family had been on their way to their in-laws for the Durga Puja holidays. They left Dhaka by bus early in the morning, reached Bogura, and then got on an autorickshaw headed to Narchi village. A speeding truck headed in the opposite direction crashed into the vehicle along the way. The autorickshaw was heavily damaged in the accident.

Driver Shukur Ali was killed on the spot. The local Fire Service rescued the injured and admitted them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Bipul and his son Biplob died there around 9am while undergoing treatment. Mamata and Rupa are still receiving treatment.

The driver and his assistant fled the spot after the accident, OC Jamirul said. The truck was taken into police custody. The bodies will be handed over to their families once legal processing is completed.
