Three people have been killed after a covered van collided head-on with an autorickshaw in Jamalpur.

Three people have been killed in a head-on collision between a covered van and an autorickshaw in Jamalpur.

Five others were injured in the accident that occurred on Monday afternoon in the Digpait EPZ area along the Jamalpur–Tangail regional highway, according to Nazmus Sakib, chief of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station.

The identities of the victims were not immediately known.

Among the injured, three people have been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment.

“A covered van travelling from Jamalpur towards Tangail collided head-on with an autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction. One person died on the spot," said Sakib.

Later, locals rescued seven injured people, including a child, and took them to Jamalpur General Hospital, where two women later died, he added.

The death toll may rise, as several of the injured were in critical condition, according to authorities.

Police have seized the covered van from the scene, though the driver and his assistant fled immediately after the crash.

Authorities are continuing efforts to identify the victims and locate the absconding driver and his aide.
