Rains continue as deep depression crosses Bangladesh coast

Offshore islands and shoals of the coastal districts may be flooded by wind-driven tidal waves measuring 1-3ft higher than usual, Met Office warns

The deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal has traversed the Bangladesh coast as rains kept pouring around the country with tidal waves on the cards in the coastal districts.

A special bulletin of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) says that the deep depression has moved further northwards crossing the coastline and made landfall in Satkhira and adjacent areas.

The Met Office said the system will continue moving north-northeastwards and gradually weaken, blowing gusty or squally winds over the North Bay, coastal areas and sea ports.

Due to the rough sea, the sea ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been instructed to hoist the local cautionary signal No. 3.

The Met Office said due to the new moon and deep depression, the coastal districts of Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakhshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Hatia, Sandwip, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and the offshore islands and shoals of the districts may be flooded by wind-driven tidal waves measurning 1-3ft higher than usual.

The BMD has asked for all fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay of Bengal to be kept in shelters until further instructions.

A low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, which later intensified and turned into a well-marked low pressure. The well-marked low pressure became a depression at 6am on Thursday, later transforming into a deep depression.

The Met Office has predicted heavy to very heavy rains across the country for the next two days.
