Police have recovered the hanging body of a man from the Sagorika flyover in Chattogram.
The body was recovered around 3:30am on Tuesday from the flyover adjacent to the BSRM depot in the port city, Pahartali Police chief Nurul Absar said.
He told bdnews24.com that the dead, identified as 27-year-old Abu Kawsar, was a resident of the West Ferozshah area of the city.
He worked as a security guard at the local BSRM factory.
“His family members told us he had long been addicted to drugs and was suffering from mental health issues,” the police officer said.
While police identified the man as Abu Kawsar, several former leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Chattogram city unit claimed on Facebook on Tuesday night that his name was Kawsar Ahmed.
Claiming the victim had served as liberation war affairs secretary of Akbar Shah Thana Chhatra League, they alleged he had been killed and later hanged from the flyover.
Asked about the allegations, officer Absar said family members confirmed the man’s name was “Abu Kawsar” and that he had no links to Chhatra League or any other political organisation.
Rejecting the murder claim, he said no injury marks were found on Kawsar’s body.
“We suspect the man may have died by suicide after hanging himself from the flyover. Even so, we are investigating the incident,” the officer said.
He added that the body was handed over to the family after a postmortem examination, while a case of unnatural death has been filed over the incident.
