Labour and Employment Advisor M Sakhawat Hussain has reminded that both Bangladesh and India will be impacted if trade between the two countries is ceased.
After visiting the Bhomra Land Port in Satkhira at noon on Saturday, he told journalists: “If India wants to stop trade with us, will only we be affected, or will India suffer too? I do not think they would close such a large market.”
The advisor continued, "They stopped exporting cattle, but does that mean we no longer eat beef? If they halt trade, their economy will suffer too. Millions of people are connected to this sector. It’s politics for them, but they’re also dependent on it.”
Sakhawat expressed doubt that business communities on either side would support such measures.
"I do not think traders would back such a decision. Let them impose political blockades if they want; they need this trade more than we do," he added.
On the topic of national unity, the advisor said: "Politicians run the country. If there is no consensus among them, the path to national progress becomes chaotic. The gathering of all political parties is a good example of unity.”
Earlier, Sakhawat reviewed activities at the customs, immigration, and port areas and also held a discussion at the port’s administrative building.
