Police have arrested Md Rubel Ahmed, the son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's chauffeur for allegedly plotting to subvert the interim government.
Rubel, a leader of the Chhatra League, was tasked with maintaining communication with officials from the Gonobhaban quarters, as well as personnel from the administration, police and military, according to the police. He is believed to have been involved in a conspiracy to overthrow the interim government.
Rubel, the son of Razzak Matbar, was arrested on Wednesday in the Basila Metro Housing area of Mohammadpur, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner Jewel Rana of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Division.
"A case is being filed against Rubel under the Anti-Terrorism Act. There may also be charges against him for anti-state conspiracy due to his involvement in activities against the nation."
In a Facebook post on Feb 7, expatriate journalist Zulkarnain Saer, citing a 'special' intelligence agency, said Rubel was responsible for liaising with officials from the Gonobhaban quarters, Adabor, as well as the administration, police and military.
Police have confirmed these details following Rubel's arrest.
