Maj Gen Ziaul Ahsan, a former army official who was recently removed from duty as director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre, has been arrested.
He was arrested in connection with the murder case of hawker Shahjahan filed at New Market Police Station, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Obaidur Rahman, a spokesman for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Ahsan was arrested late last night, he said.
The army official had been relieved of duty on Aug 6 amid a high-level shake-up in the military following the changeover in power.
Ahsan, who was commissioned to the military in 1991, was a trained commando and paratrooper. He was the deputy commander of RAB-2 in 2009.
That year he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and made the director of the Detective Wing of RAB headquarters. Since then, he has been a notable figure in the media.
He was promoted to the rank of additional director general in 2013, then brigadier general in 2016. Ahsan was then appointed as the head of the National Security Intelligence.
The following year, he was appointed as director of the NTMC. In 2022, when the post of director general was created at the agency, he was appointed to it.
