The government has extended the tenure of Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun by one year.

Mamun's new tenure will begin on Jul 12, 2024, and expire on Jul 11, 2025, or from his date of joining, in continuation of the previous agreement and under the same conditions, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Friday.

The government appointed then Rapid Action Battalion chief Mamun as the IGP after Benazir Ahmed retired. The notification was issued on Sept 22, 2022.

Mamun assumed his new duties on Sept 30 that year.

He was scheduled to retire on Jan 11, 2023, upon reaching the age limit for service.

However, on Jan 9, the government suspended his post-retirement leave and other benefits, appointing him on a contractual basis for one and a half years.

Mamun, an officer from the eighth batch of BCS, was promoted to grade 1 on Oct 18, 2021.

Born on Jan 12, 1964, at Sreehail village in Sunamganj’s Shalla Upazila, he studied sociology at Chattogram University. He began his career as an assistant superintendent of police in 1986.

He served in various roles, including at the Police Headquarters, Metropolitan Police, Armed Police Battalion, and different district units. He also participated in UN peacekeeping missions.

Mamun received the President Police Medal, or PPM, and Bangladesh Police Medal, or BPM, for his contributions to the field.
