Nazrul Islam Majumdar, former chairman of Exim Bank and the Bangladesh Association of Banks, or BAB, has been arrested in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said the arrest took place on Tuesday midnight.
DB Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallick said Majumdar was taken to the DB office on Minto Road following his arrest.
There are several charges against him, he added.
Majumdar is the chairman of NASA Group, which has recently faced protests from workers at its garment factories in Ashulia over unpaid wages.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime, some entrepreneurs in the banking sector, including Majumder, reportedly went into hiding. There were rumours that he had fled the country.
Bangladesh Bank formed a new board for Exim Bank on Aug 29, excluding Majumder, leading to his removal from BAB as well.
Though he is no longer a member of the board, Majumder remains a shareholder.
Majumder had held the position of chairman at Exim Bank since 2007 and led the BAB since 2009.
During his tenure as BAB chair, he faced criticism for raising funds from private banks to organise a football tournament.
On Aug 25, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, or BFIU froze the bank accounts of Majumdar and his wife Nasrin Islam.
He has been accused of extorting money from banks and faced allegations of changing the Bank Companies Act to benefit certain stakeholders.
