A sudden tornado has swept through four villages in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila, leaving a trail of destruction in just two minutes.
The sudden storm struck around midday on Tuesday, hitting Charchilgacha, Chilgacha, Bahuka, and Itali villages in Ratankandi union, local representatives said.
No casualties have been reported.
The tornado uprooted trees, blocking several roads and snapping electricity lines in the affected areas.
Abdul Alim, a resident of Charchilgacha, said: “It started raining and we were inside the house with family. Suddenly the tornado struck, tearing everything apart.
“We barely escaped with our lives. Now, with the house gone, we’re left under the open sky.”
Rafiqul Islam Dhullu, member of Ward No. 8 of the union, said the storm rolled in from one side of the villages as dark clouds around 2pm.
“In just two minutes, it tore through the tin-roofed houses and trees of four villages. Some homes were completely lifted off the ground,” he added.
“Many trees fell across roads, cutting off access and power supply. Crops have been damaged, and poultry farms have collapsed.
“People were seen collecting furniture from far-off places. Some were clearing fallen trees to reopen the roads,” he added.
Zubayel Hossain, administrative officer of the Ratankandi Union Parishad, said at least 50 homes were damaged in Charchilgacha alone.
“A report has been sent to the UNO office. The full list of affected families will be made once officials arrive,” he said.
Union Parishad Administrator Meraj Hossain Misbah said, “A list of the affected is being compiled. The administration will provide full support to the victims.”
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), or Upazila executive officer, Monowar Hossain said around 4pm,
“We have already sent the PIO [project implementation officer] to the affected areas. I will visit shortly.”
Upazila Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Nazrul Islam said emergency relief items have been arranged.
“Rehabilitation will begin once the list of affected families is finalised,” he added.
