Two suspects have confessed in court to their involvement in last week’s attack on the shrine of Nurul Haque aka “Nural Pagla” in Rajbari’s Goalanda.
Police say three more people have been arrested on Monday over the violence, bringing the total number of arrests to 14.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md Sharif Al Rajib said both confessions were recorded under Section 164 before a magistrate at the Goalanda judicial court.
Among them, Kazi Apu from Kazi Para gave his statement on Sunday, admitting to exhuming Nural Pagla’s body, desecrating the corpse, and attacking police personnel.
The second suspect, identified only as Billu, confessed on Monday to vandalising a police vehicle and taking part in the assault on law enforcers.
Neither suspect has any known political affiliation, according to Sharif.
He added that Goalanda Ghat Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Rashedul Islam, who is the case’s investigation officer, presented them in court and sought permission to record their statements.
Police say Apu and Billu were arrested on Saturday and Sunday nights, respectively.
