Dengue: Bangladesh records first death-free day in 10 weeks

Bangladesh has seen no death from dengue fever after 73 days as no fatalities were reported from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours.

Every day since Oct 4, someone has died from the illness, taking the total count of fatalities to 548 so far this year.

The number of patients hospitalised with the infection this year has risen to 98,877.

The Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS, said as many as 132 new patients were hospitalised in the Dhaka metropolitan area until Sunday.

In addition, 88 were hospitalised in the Dhaka Division, 15 in the Mymensingh Division, 34 in the Chattogram Division, 44 in the Khulna Division, 20 in the Rajshahi Division, 36 in the Barishal Division, and two each in the Rangpur and Sylhet divisions.

As many as 1,667 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country. Of them, 650 are hospitalised in the capital and 1,017 are outside Dhaka.

The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and fatalities since 2000.

Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023. That year also saw the most deaths with 1,705.
