Two people have died after allegedly consuming spurious alcohol in Bogura.

Two others who fell sick after the liquor consumption are receiving treatment at the hospital.

Bogura Sadar Police Station chief SM Moinuddin said the incident had occurred in the city’s Thanthania Bottola area on Friday night.

The deceased were identified as city residents 35-year-old Aurangzeb Chintu and 30-year-old Rasel, identified by a single name.

Another man who provided a single name, 56-year-old Pilu and 30-year-old Sony Das from the area have been hospitalised.

Pilu, who is undergoing treatment at Mohammad Ali Hospital in Bogura, said: "Rasel bought a bottle of alcohol from No. 1 Rail Ghumti area in the city on Thursday afternoon. The four of them then drank together and fell sick at night."

He said they had claimed to have diarrhoea during their admission to the hospital fearing police action.

The hospital’s Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Saifur Shahin said, "Pilu claimed to have diarrhoea while admitted to the hospital.

“However, he was moved to the medicine department due to breathing issues and abdominal pain. He is still in critical condition.”

The officer, however, said it would be known whether Pilu fell ill after drinking alcohol after the test.

The other injured, Sony, has been admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.

The hospital’s Deputy Director Abdul Wadud said, "We have no information about the deaths of Chintu and Rasel. They probably died on the way. But Sony is admitted here. His condition is critical. But his problem is not yet identified."

OC Moinuddin said police personnel were sent to the houses upon information over two people’s deaths due to excessive drinking. The family members of the two have misbehaved instead of cooperating with police.

"They provided no information to police and completed their burial by 3pm on Saturday."

The OC said legal action could not be taken right now as the hospital did not inform police about the deaths of the two.
