A pure drinking water corner has been opened at Gazipur’s Joydebpur Railway Junction in memory of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, a student martyred in the July Uprising.
Joydebpur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin inaugurated the “Mugdho Pure Drinking Water Corner” for general passengers on Tuesday.
The deputy commissioner said, “The Mugdho corner has been set up for the convenience of the working class in Gazipur. This will keep Mugdho’s memory burning forever.”
Mugdho died by gunfire during a clash between the students and police at Uttara’s Azampur on Jul 18, amid the Students Against Discrimination protests. He was a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals.
Video footage of Mugdho distributing drinking water and snacks just before he was shot in the head, went viral and spurred protests as his death sent shock waves through the nation.
District Council Chief Executive Officer Khandaker Mudassir Bin Ali, Additional Police Commissioner Zahidul Hasan and Police Superintendent Zaber Sadek, among others, spoke at the inaugural ceremony.
Gazipur District Council built the pure water corner at a cost of Tk 975,000 to mark the anniversary of the mass uprising, said Mudassir.
Jahidul Islam, a passenger waiting for a train to Shantahar at Joydebpur Junction, was refilling drinking water from the new corner.
Hailing the initiative, he said: “The rail stations in Bangladesh lack a supply of pure drinking water. This corner set up by the Gazipur administration has addressed the crisis of pure drinking water for the general passengers to a great extent.”
Earlier, the deputy commissioner and other administration officials laid wreaths at the graves of July martyrs.
