New Bangladesh Navy chief Vice Admiral Khondokar Misbah ul Azim has paid tribute to members of the armed forces who laid down their lives in the Liberation War.

He placed a wreath at Shikha Anirban in Dhaka Cantonment and signed the visitors' book there on Friday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

Principal staff officers of Naval Headquarters received him on his arrival, followed by a smartly turned-out naval contingent presenting a guard of honour, which the navy chief inspected before taking the salute, it added.

Senior principal staff officers and other high-ranking navy officers were present.

The ISPR said the navy chief is committed to strengthening Bangladesh's maritime sovereignty and security by building a “strong, modern” blue-water navy in line with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's directives.

The plan includes adding modern frigates, submarines, advanced sonar and radar systems, and other technologies to protect the country's maritime boundary and blue economy, it added.

The government promoted Rear Admiral Misbah ul Azim to vice admiral on Jul 16 and appointed him as the navy chief.

He most recently served as the Bangladeshi ambassador to Oman, succeeding Admiral M Nazmul Hassan at the top post of the naval force.

A student of Rajshahi Cadet College's 17th batch, Misbah earned his commission in the navy in 1987.

During his service career, he commanded key formations across naval regions, including Dhaka and Chattogram zones.

He also served as the commandant of the Bangladesh Naval Academy.
