A Dhaka court has granted police one day to interrogate actress Asma Akter Jhilik’s husband in a case over her death after she fell from a hospital balcony in Dhanmondi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order on Saturday against suspect Safi Ullah for allegedly abetting suicide.

Jhilik died after falling from the seventh-floor balcony of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital on Friday afternoon.

Subsequently, her elder brother Mozammel Haque filed the case with Dhanmondi Model Police.

Producing the suspect before the court, investigating officer and Dhanmondi Model Police Sub-Inspector Kazi Abdul Mannan pleaded for seven days to remand him into custody for questioning.

According to the case dossier, Safi was admitted to the hospital with stomach pain. He was discharged around 10am on Friday.

After that, Jhilik asked her relatives to send Tk16,000 to pay the hospital bill.

Around 1:15pm, she spoke to her younger sister Reshmi Akhter on a video call. But Safi called Jhilik’s father an hour later to inform him of the death, says the case.

Brother Mozammel alleged that police did not register a murder case.

Instead, they hastily recorded the abetment to suicide case.

Dhanmondi Mode Police chief Muhammad Saiful Islam said, "Safi and Jhilik locked in an argument in his cabin on the eighth floor of the hospital.

"At one point, Jhilik wife fell from the balcony and died," he said.

Jhilik worked on several projects on both the small and big screens. She was also seen in a movie starring Shakib Khan.
