Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has directed the chiefs of Dhaka’s police stations to search vehicles that “wander without valid reason” to strengthen security in the neighbourhoods.
“Vehicles, including microbuses or private cars that loiter without a clear purpose, should be thoroughly searched. Police patrols need to be intensified, particularly during early morning hours, to deter mugging.
“Extortionists, no matter their identity, must be held accountable,” Sajjat said during a meeting with 50 OCs, or officers-in-charge, at the DMP Headquarters on Monday afternoon, according to a press release issued by the agency.
"The more connections you establish with people, the more valuable information you'll gather," he emphasised.
"OCs should patrol every alley and engage with the community. With better information, proactive measures can be taken to prevent crimes before they happen," Sajjat added.
The DMP commissioner said, "Providing respectful treatment to victims and service seekers is crucial. Subordinates should receive regular briefings to stay aligned. Our sacred duty, bestowed by the Almighty, is to ensure public safety, and it must be carried out with utmost diligence. Justice must be upheld by following the righteous path."
He also directed OCs to file cases promptly if complaints are deemed valid and to take swift action on general diary matters.
During the discussion, he listened to challenges faced by police at the station level and said that solutions would be provided over time.
In recognition of his bravery, the DMP commissioner awarded Batara Police Station Assistant Sub Inspector Mesbah Uddin.
He commended Mesbah's courage, calling it exemplary.
Mesbah was honoured for arresting “mugger” Mobarak Hossain Nafiz despite being injured in a stabbing incident in Batara's J-Block area on the evening of Jan 15.
OCs Hafizur Rahman of Uttara West Police Station and Ali Iftekhar Hasan of Mohammadpur Police Station were also rewarded for arresting a significant number of “muggers” during ongoing special operations.
