A BCS examinee caught with electronic devices at the 47th preliminary examination centre has been sent to jail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq passed the order on Saturday.

Solaiman Islam was detained on Friday morning while entering Eden Mohila College centre with two electronic chips and three earphones.

Following his arrest, an official of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission Secretariat, Porikshit Modhu, initiated a case against him under the Cyber Security Act at Lalbagh Police Station.

Investigation officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdur Razzak of Lalbagh Police sought to quiz Sulaiman for five days on Saturday, saying the accused was part of “an organised crime racket”.

He said Solaiman carried the devices into the centre “to commit fraud with the help of others.”

Defending his client, lawyer Mizanur Rahman opposed the remand petition and applied for bail.

He told the court, “Solaiman brought the device by mistake. Students of his age often carry different gadgets. He did not know bringing devices was a crime. It was an unintentional incident.

“The accused is 27 years old. He has a bright career ahead. Keeping him in jail over a single mistake will damage his future prospects.”

After hearing both sides, the judge rejected the bail and remand pleas, ordering Solaiman to be sent to jail, SI Ashraful Islam of the Prosecution Division said.

According to the case statement, Porikshit was on duty as an invigilator at the 47th BCS preliminary exam in Eden College. Around 8:30am on Friday, Solaiman entered through Gate No. 1 where a metal detector check revealed two electronic chips taped above his ankles with scotch tape, three earphones, and an admit card. He was immediately detained.

The case added that the devices were capable of transmitting exam questions outside the centre to one or more people prepared to provide answers.

The complaint said the fraud involved an organised group who collaborated to use digital devices for cheating.
