A fire has ripped through a kitchen market at Gazipur's Chandana intersection, destroying about 40 shops that sold chicken, potatoes, onions, spices and groceries.
However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
The fire erupted around 5:45am on Thursday, according to Mohammad Mamun, deputy assistant director of the Gazipur Fire Service.
Three units from the Bhogra Fire Service and two from Joydebpur were dispatched to the scene and worked for more than an hour to bring the flames under control.
The fire was fully extinguished by 7:20am, Mamun said.
He added that the cause of the fire and the scale of the damage would be determined after an investigation.
Anisur Rahman, a businessman, said the fire appeared to have started at a spice shop on the northern side of the market before spreading rapidly to surrounding stalls.
He estimated that losses could run into several millions of taka.
