Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has expressed his deep shock and sorrow over the death of KM Shafiullah, a sector commander of the 1971 Liberation War and former chief of the army.

In a condolence message, the chief advisor said that people in Bangladesh would remember KM Shafiullah’s saga of bravery with gratitude.

Shafiullah played a significant role as a sector commander in the Liberation War of 1971, Yunus said in the condolence message sent by his office on Sunday.

In 1971, Shafiullah was the second-in-command of the Second East Bengal Regiment in Joydebpur. During the Liberation War, the force led by him was known as the ‘S Force.’ For his remarkable contributions during the war, Shafiullah was awarded the title “Bir Uttom”.

After the independence, KM Shafiullah served as the chief of army from 1972 to 1975, the message said.

"We recall his contribution to the country and its people with gratitude. People from all walks of life will remember his bravery forever,” the chief advisor said.

Yunus prayed for salvation of the departed soul of Shafiullah and peace in the afterlife. He expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family.
