At least three people have died after a battery-operated passenger vehicle, commonly known as an easybike, collided head-on with a truck in Natore’s Lalpur.
Four others were injured in the accident that occurred around 7am on Tuesday in Nabinagar village, according to Lalpur Police Station chief (OC) Mojibur Rahman. All the victims were passengers on the easybike.
The dead were identified as Jahidul Islam, 50, Monirul, 27, and Babul, 35. They were all natives of Durduria Union.
The injured are easybike driver Rabbi, 22, Mithun Saha, 35, Majnu, 40, and Rajib, 35.
Citing locals, OC Mojibur said the easybike was travelling to Ishwardi from Lalpur. On the way, a truck coming from the opposite direction slammed into the three-wheeler at Nabinagar.
The easybike was severely damaged and one person died on the spot. Six others were critically injured.
Later, the Fire Service and police went to the scene and rescued the injured. But two of them died on the way to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Following the accident, the truck driver and his assistant fled the scene, the police officer said. Both vehicles have been seized and kept at the police station.
Mojibur added that authorities were taking the necessary legal steps over the incident.
