Prof Md Mamun Or Rashid has been appointed the vice-chancellor (VC) of Barishal University for the next four years amid a strike by a section of teachers demanding “fair promotion”.
The education ministry announced the decision on Thursday, replacing Prof Mohammad Taufiq Alam.
However, after the news broke, the protesting teachers suspended the “shutdown” that had halted educational and administrative activities.
The new vice-chancellor served as the dean of the Faculty of Fisheries at Patuakhali Science and Technology University. He was previously the treasurer of Barishal University.
On May 13, 2025, the ministry cancelled his appointment along with that of the then vice-chancellor, Prof Shuchita Sharmin.
After almost a year, he was appointed as the university's seventh VC.
Dhiman Kumer Roy, chairman of the Department of Geology and Mining at Barishal University, said the teachers' agitation will be suspended following Prof Rashid's appointment.
He said, "We demanded to remove the vice-chancellor [Taufiq Alam]. That demand has been met. Now the teachers will hold a meeting and make the next decision.
“We will suspend the protests and try to resolve the problem by discussing with the new VC," Dhiman said.
The removal of Prof Taufiq Alam is the third such incident when a VC of the university was replaced amid protests.
The teachers started their “no-work protest” in all university activities on Monday, locking several buildings, including the academic one.
They threatened to continue the protests until their demands were met.
Around 10:30am on Thursday, the fourth day of the movement, Prof Toufiq Alam entered his office and started working.
But in a few hours, the government replaced him.
The notification says the new appointment will last for four years or until retirement.
But the appointment can be cancelled by the chancellor anytime, it adds.
Prof M Badruzzaman Bhuiyan and Prof Shuchita Sharmin were the previous two VCs who were removed following protests.
