Two people have been beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of robbery in Chattogram’s Satkania, leaving at least five others injured.
The incident took place on Monday night in Chan Khola Churamoni village under Kanchana Union of the Upazila.
“Locals surrounded them on suspicion of being robbers. Later, two were killed in the mob beating. We are investigating what actually happened,” Chattogram District Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam Shontu told bdnews24.com.
A pistol was recovered from the scene, he said, adding: “It resembles the type used by police. We are also looking into this matter.”
Satkania Police Station chief Jahedul Islam said the victims were travelling in a CNG-run autorickshaw when an announcement was made through loudspeakers identifying them as robbers.
Locals then gathered, surrounded them, and beat them to death.
“One of the dead was found with a pistol and six spent bullet casings. Police have also seized the autorickshaw,” he said.
“The identities of the dead have not yet been confirmed. We are at the scene and investigating the incident,” Jahedul added.
Meanwhile, SI Alauddin Talukder of the police camp at Chattogram Medical College Hospital said the five injured were initially brought to CMCH before being transferred to a private hospital.
