Members of the Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, have gathered at Shahbagh and the Hotel Intercontinental intersection, braving the rain to demanding justice for the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo. However, traffic flow remains uninterrupted in the area.

Leaders and activists from different levels of the Chhatra Dal began to gather at Shahbagh at 10am on Thursday.

They chanted several slogans demanding justice for Shammo’s murder and against the university’s proctor.

Earlier on May 13, Shammo was stabbed with a knife at 11pm at the Suhrawardy Udyan. When he was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the doctor declared him dead.

The next day, Shammo’s brother Shariful Alam filed a case with the Shahbagh Police Station naming 10 to 12 people as suspects. Police have arrested three people in connection with the case and remanded them.

Shammo was a student of the 2018-19 academic year at the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University. He was also the literature and publication secretary of the AF Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal. He hailed from Sirajganj’s Belkuchi.

Chhatra Dal and Dhaka University students have been staging protests for the past week demanding justice for Shammo’s murder.

Earlier they staged protest blocking the Shahbagh intersection.
