The oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected president will be held at Bangabhaban on Friday evening, the day after the election.

The presidential election will be held at the Parliament House from 2pm to 5pm on Thursday. BNP’s Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Oli Ahmed of the 11-party alliance are racing for the post.

On Wednesday, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni told bdnews24.com: “Preparations have been made for the elected president to take the oath at Bangabhaban at 7pm on Aug 21. There are no difficulties with the preparations on our side.”

Briefing reporters at his office at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on the overall preparations for the presidential election, Chief Election Commissioner and Election Officer AMM Nasir Uddin said that all necessary preparations had been completed.

Voting will take place from 2pm to 5pm on Thursday.

“I will announce the results in the parliamentary chamber immediately after voting ends. The gazette notification of the election results will then be published.”

Parliament Secretary Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan told bdnews24.com that the Cabinet Division, rather than the Parliament Secretariat, would organise the president’s oath-taking ceremony.

Regarding preparations for the election, he said: “We have provided all the information we were required to provide. Everything they have asked for so far is in place. There’s no problem.”

There are 349 voters in the election. Of them, 247 are from the BNP, 77 from Jamaat-e-Islami, while the remaining voters are lawmakers from other represented parties and independents.

Voting is set to take place in the parliamentary chamber for the first time in 35 years. CEC Nasir Uddin, who is serving as the election officer for the presidential election, has called the meeting for this purpose.

The election is being conducted under the Presidential Election Act, 1991.

Twenty assistant officials from the Election Commission will assist the election officer in conducting the election, while a required number of officials from the Parliament Secretariat will also be deployed.

The four election commissioners are also expected to attend the Parliament to observe the voting.

After the parliamentary system was restored, voting took place in the presidential election on Oct 8, 1991, as there were two candidates. In the past seven elections, presidents were elected unopposed as there was only one candidate each time.

Meanwhile, the ruling BNP has nominated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its candidate for the presidential election. With the party holding a majority in Parliament, he is set to become Bangladesh’s 23rd head of state.

On Jul 24, Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from the position with nearly two years of his term still remaining. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has assumed the responsibilities of the president.
