Angry residents have blocked the highway with the body of a former Bangladesh Chhatra League, or BCL, leader after he was hacked to death in Sadullapur Upazila of Gaibandha.
After the murder in Dhaperhat at 3:45pm on Thursday, locals blocked the Jamdani Road intersection of the Dhaka-Rangpur highway around 6pm, said Sadullapur Police Station chief Taj Uddin Khandaker.
They left the road at 8pm following police requests and assurances of justice.
The deceased, Abdullah Al Mamun Mandal, 30, was a former joint general secretary of Dhaperhat Union Chhatra League and a resident of Khamarpara village.
He was a net fast bowler for Sylhet Strikers in the Bangladesh Premier League, or BPL.
Police and witnesses said Mamun was seen in the area around 3:30pm, moments before a group of miscreants fatally stabbed him with sharp weapons.
Upon receiving the news, his relatives took him to the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex in neighbouring Rangpur district, where he passed away.
Later, locals placed Mamun's body on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway near Dhaperhat to block the road.
The deceased's father, Abdul Mannan Mandal, said Mamun had not been active in politics for the past few years and been focused on playing cricket.
He had returned home from Sylhet on Wednesday.
Mannan demanded immediate justice for his son's murder.
Police station chief Taj Uddin said police are continuing their operation to identify and arrest the miscreants in this incident.
