Three people have been killed after a truck ploughed into a CNG-run autorickshaw in Gazipur's Kaliakair Upazila.
Two others were injured in the collision that occurred on the Maona-Fulbari regional road in the Namashulai area around 8:45am on Saturday, according to the police.
The autorickshaw was carrying passengers from Sreepur's Maona Chowrasta to Kaliakair when it collided with a brick-laden truck coming from the opposite direction, police said, citing witnesses.
The collision left the three-wheeler in a crumpled heap. The autorickshaw driver, identified by a single name as Obaidul, along with a woman and an elderly man, died at the scene. Another passenger suffered critical injuries and was rushed to the Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Meanwhile, the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.
"Three people died in the head-on collision. While the driver's identity has been confirmed, we are still working to determine the identities of the other victims. Legal action will be taken in connection with the incident," said Sub-Inspector Kamrul Hasan of Kaliakair Police Station.
