Garment factory owners in the Ashulia industrial zone have declared a general holiday at 79 factories amidst unrest, despite tight security and operations by the joint forces.
Mohammad Sarwar Alam, superintendent of Industrial Police-1, said workers arrived at their factories on Monday morning to resume work.
However, when some workers tried to take to the streets, factory authorities declared holidays due to the panic, he added.
Earlier, on Sunday, the authorities had declared holidays at 32 factories to prevent further unrest.
On Sunday night, protesters attacked and attempted to set fire to a Rapid Action Battalion, or RAB, vehicle and vandalised an army vehicle near the Bengal Group's Euphoria Apparels Limited factory in the Shimultala area of Ashulia.
On Monday morning, workers headed to various factories in the Ashulia industrial area, but some returned home after discovering their factories were closed.
The factories that remained open continued production smoothly.
Around noon, many workers began leaving their factories one after another.
At a few factories, some workers staged protests.
Khairul Mamun Mintu, legal affairs secretary of the Bangladesh Garments and Sweaters Workers Trade Union Centre, said over a 100 factories declared holidays on Monday.
He added the army dispersed workers who tried to protest at several points on the Dhaka-Tangail road.
“The factories that have accepted workers’ demands are operating as usual. We hope that if the owners show some sincerity towards the workers’ demands, this problem will be resolved,” said Mintu.
