Google has opened pre-orders for its new Googlebook laptop at $899, introducing a device designed around its Gemini artificial intelligence system, according to TechCrunch.
The laptop runs on Android OS with a desktop version of Chrome and incorporates familiar ChromeOS features. Google is presenting it as a step beyond conventional Chromebooks by integrating AI into everyday computer functions.
TechCrunch reported that one of the main features is Magic Cursor, an AI-powered pointer that can highlight webpage content, check emails for potential scams and work with selected images through Gemini.
Google has also introduced Rambler, which turns unstructured voice notes into cleaner written text. Other features include vibe-coded widgets, Gemini Spark and Gemini Live.
The report also added that several of these tools may not require new hardware, raising questions over whether Gemini alone will persuade users to replace existing laptops.
Google's longer-term strategy could be particularly significant in education.
The company has said about 50 million Chromebooks are used by students and educators. Existing devices will continue to receive support, while Googlebook could eventually bring those users into the company's wider Gemini ecosystem, TechCrunch attested.
The $899 laptop includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, 5TB of cloud storage and advanced Gemini tools, along with three months of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop.
Google has said the devices will receive updates for up to 10 years.
The laptops will go on sale on Oct 4 in the United States and Oct 5 in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia.
Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo are producing models with displays of up to 2.8K OLED, haptic glass trackpads and backlit keyboards. Google has said the devices can offer up to 14 hours of battery life.
