Dhaka, Aug 23 (BDNEWS) – At last Bangladesh found a gold medal in the South Asian (SA) Games when promising swimmer Shahjahan Ali Rony became champion in the 50m breaststroke at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo Wednesday.
The 19-year old BKSP student Rony, who got silver in 100m breaststroke event, reached the 50m distance clocking 30.43 seconds, .03 second ahead of second placed Indian Sandeep Sejwal, who clinched the 100m breaststroke gold.
Bangladeshi Niaz Ali got a bronze medal in the event timing 31.52 seconds.
Rubel Rana, who finished fifth in 100m backstroke event earlier, restored his reputation with grabbing 50m backstroke silver clocking 28.40 seconds, staying behind of Indian Arjaun Muralitharan, who took 28.28 seconds to clinch the gold medal.
In the women's event, Dolly Akter also got 50m breaststroke silver medal timing 36.14 seconds while Sri Lankan Mayumiraheem found gold clocking 34.97 seconds.
Bangladeshi Mahfuza Khatun grabbed the bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke clocking 36.87 seconds.
