Dhaka, Mar 17 (BDNEWS) – Asif Hossain Khan and Anjan Kumar Singh pair brought the first laurel for the nation bagging silver medal in the men's 10m Air Rifles Pairs event in the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne Friday.
Asif and Anjan together scored 1181 points, eight points behind of gold medalists Indian pair of Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang, to bag the silver medal.
Asif Khan, who clinched the gold medal in 10m Air Rifles in Manchester 2002, scored 594 (99, 100, 100, 98, 98 and 99) out of total 600 points and Anjan Kumar scored 587 (99, 96, 99, 95, 99 and 99) out of equal number of points.
Though the male shooters hoisted the national flag in Melbourne, the woman shooters were far behind with finishing seventh among 12 in the women's 10m Air Rifles Pairs event.
Suraiya Akter and Sharmin Akter pair scored 773 points, seven points behind the bronze medalist pair Zhen Vanessa Yong Yu and Jingna Zhang of Singapore.
Indian Tejaswini and Avneet Kaur Sidhu pair bagged the gold medal scoring 791 points out of 800 points.
Suraiya scored a total of 386 (98, 95, 96 and 97) and Sharmin scored 387 (96, 97, 98 and 96) out of 400 points.
Weightlifter Hamidul Islam, whose game preview ranking was 10th with 225 kg, finished sixth in men's 62-kg category with lifting a total of 256 kg -- 110 kg in Snatch and 146 kg in Clean and Jerk.
Sri Lankan Chinthana clinched the gold medal with lifting 271 kg -– 118 in Snatch and 153 kg in Clean and Jerk.
Swimmer Jewel Ahmed became 28th, out of 43, in the men's 50m butterfly clocking 26.68 seconds.
Jewel Ahmed, however, improved his timing this time surpassing his previous record of 26.78 seconds in the same event in the 17th Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.
